Committee Passes Nichols’ Bill to Keep
Free Roads Free
Senate Transportation Committee passes SB 1268

Austin—Today the Senate Committee on Transportation and Homeland Security unanimously passed SB 1268 by Sen. Robert Nichols (R-Jacksonville), which prohibits the conversion of existing public roads into toll roads.

“These roads were built with public money for public use,” said Nichols. “Converting them to toll roads now would break a promise to taxpayers.”

Currently, a free road can be converted to a toll road through a process and ultimately approved by voters.

Nichols stressed keeping non-tolled roads free helps Texans feel secure about their transportation system.

“No one should have to worry that the free roads they use today will be tolled tomorrow,” said Nichols.
