Deal Finalized to Keep Toledo Bend Lake Levels High

May 24, 2007

Austin—Today, the Sabine River Authority finalized an agreement with the power company to help keep the Toledo Bend Lake level high. Legislators who helped facilitate the agreement praised the action.

“The finalized agreement is a testament to the way public and private entities can work together to find the best solution for everyone,” said Sen. Robert Nichols (R-Jacksonville). “It’s a true win-win arrangement.”

The agreement will halt the generation of hydroelectric power from Toledo Bend Dam when the reservoir drops to 168 feet. Under the proposed agreement, Entergy will compensate the river authorities for water usage, but the river authorities will reimburse the electric producer for replacement electricity when generation ceases due to low-lake levels. The Sabine River authority of Louisiana approved a similar resolution on April 26.

“Keeping Toledo Bend’s lake level high is essential to the economic health and well-being of the area.” said Rep. Mike “Tuffy” Hamilton (R- Mauriceville).  “I appreciate the hard work of everyone to find a workable solution.”

Rep. Wayne Christian (R-Center) echoed Hamilton’s sentiment.

“The importance of keeping Toledo Bend Reservoir full is undeniable,” said Christian. “By maintaining a minimum level, the trade and commerce associated with the lake can thrive.”
