Nichols Files Bill to Keep Free Roads Free

March 06, 2007

Austin - State Senator Robert Nichols (R-Jacksonville) today filed SB ___, which would prohibit converting established free roads into toll roads.

“These roads were built with public money for public use,” said Nichols. “Converting them to toll roads now would break a promise to taxpayers.”

Under current law, a road can be converted to a toll road if approved by local voters even though many roads have regional and statewide use.

Nichols stressed keeping free roads free helps Texans feel secure about their transportation system.

“No one should have to worry that the free roads they use today will be tolled tomorrow,” said Nichols.
